Sensory Activities for Elders with Dementia

Sensory Activities for Elders with Dementia

You may often find that your loved elder with Alzheimer’s or dementia live with anxiety, agitation, or anger.

To soothe and ease their disturbed mood, you can offer them sensory activities. These simple touch-based activities will occupy your elder’s hands and mind, and effectively reduce anxiety, calm nerves and provide comfort.

Some benefits of sensory stimulation therapy are:

  • Can help the elder stay in the moment and interact with their current surroundings
  • Engages five sense, stimulating the brain and cognitive function
  • Provides relaxation and feeling of safety
  • Improves mood, self-esteem and overall well-being
  • Encourages more participation and interactions with friends and family

So we suggest 7 simple and fun sensory activities that elders with dementia would love:

1. DIY Aquarium Sensory Bag

Blossom’s video on how to make a sensory bag can be shown here: https://www.facebook.com/FirstMediaBlossom/videos/10154377895179586/

You can also be creative and replace the ocean animals with other items to change to a theme that your elder would enjoy. These can be things like other varieties of animals or flowers.

2. Scented Sensory Cards

Smells are a powerful stimulant that trigger memories and emotions. So incorporating activities that accompany pleasant scents can help the older adult feel relaxed and pleased.

3. Homemade Non-toxic Finger Paint

With this safe, homemade paint, your older adult can freely express creativity with fingers. Getting their hands messy provides a tactile experience that can stimulate sensory processing skills. You can get the non-toxic finger paint recipe here: https://invitationtothebutterflyball.blogspot.com/2010/05/home-made-finger-paint-with-recipe.html

4. Coin Sorting

Sorting coins into small bowls is a fun and soothing way to keep your elder entertained. As they pick up the coins, the clattering sound and cold, metallic surface of coins can stimulate their senses. Also, it may give your older adult a sense of purpose if you ask them to help you sort your loose change.

5. Popping Bubble Wraps or Pop-it Fidget Toys

If you have any bubble wraps at home, offer your elder some popping activities. This is a simple, yet surprisingly satisfying activity that is easily accessible.

An alternative to this can be a Pop-it fidget toy (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=pop+it&crid=XRXUOYLFFJUH&sprefix=%2Caps%2C279&ref=nb_sb_ss_recent_1_0_recent) that comes in various sizes, colours and designs.

6. Magic Sand

Magic or kinetic sand is a special type of sand that is non-toxic, hypoallergenic and safe for use. It is easy to maintain and mould, perfect for sensory stimulation and entertainment. You can also buy sand kits and mould frames to make the experience more fun!

7. Create a Memory Box

Find a small shoebox and fill it with sentimental items. These can be family photos, jewellery, and other items that were loved by your elder. Any item that would spark a memory or stimulate the senses could have a positive impact.

When a loved one is living with dementia, it can be a challenge for them and also to those in their surrounding. With sensory stimulation activities, you and your elder can enjoy each other’s company and spend quality time together.
