Senior Sleep Problems: Part 1 – 7 Common Causes

Senior Sleep Problems: Part 1 – 7 Common Causes

Ageing comes with many changes to your body, which includes sleep patterns. This is primarily caused by changes in the body’s internal clock, located in the brain.

Deterioration in the brain function can disrupt hormone cycles, directly influencing when people feel tired and alert.

Such disruption to sleep rhythm causes many seniors to have a hard time falling and remain asleep. They may often get up in the night and be prompted to move around in the darkness. This poses risks like falling, injury or leaving the house and getting lost, especially for those with dementia. When not treated early on, the older adult may even develop chronic sleep deprivation, reducing their quality of life.

So what are common reasons for senior sleep problems?
There are several sleep issues that are especially common in older adults.

1. Pain

Discomfort and pain can disrupt sleep for older adults. Under pain, they have difficulty falling asleep, which in return causes more pain, forming a vicious cycle to their health condition. Therefore, consultation with a doctor is advised if pain is interfering with sleep.

2. Nighttime Urination

As known as nocturia, nighttime urination increases with age due to physical changes in the urinary system. It affects up to 80% of older adults.

3. Insomnia

Insomnia is one of the most common issues in older adults. It is a sleeping condition that can be improved with appropriate treatment.

4. Daytime Drowsiness

Approximately 20% of seniors experience excessive daytime sleepiness, interrupting the sleeping cycle. It may be a symptom of health issues like sleep apnea, cognitive impairment, or cardiovascular issues.

5. Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea causes fragmented sleep and affects oxygen levels in the body, which leads to headaches, daytime sleepiness, and cognitive abilities.

6. Restless Legs Syndrome

This syndrome causes an urge to move the legs while resting or sleeping, which can interfere with an older adult’s sleep.

7. REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder

Prevalent in older people, this disorder can cause people to physically act out their dreams.

With appropriate intervention and the right steps, sleeping can immensely be improved. Read our next post for ‘Sleep Tips for Older Adults’.
