Falls Alarm

Falls Alarm

Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury in older Australians, with around 30% of those aged over 65 years experiencing at least one fall each year. For the safety of loved ones, helpful devices can be used, one of which is a falls alarm.

What is a Falls Alarm?

A falls alarm is a support device that detects any falls of the user. With its built-in sensor, it monitors the person’s movements and sends an alert to the appropriate people so that they can provide help. This extra layer of protection can ensure safety and a peace of mind for the elder and his or her family members.

Types of Falls Alarms

There are several types of falls detection devices. The most common types are wearable ones, usually in the form of a pendant worn around the neck or around the wrist. They are easy to use and do not require any additional knowledge of technology, making it accessible for seniors who usually need the service the most.

Who needs it?

Any individual who is worried about falling and who has fallen should consider purchasing a falls alarm. Those may include:

  • Seniors who live alone and are unable to seek help
  • People diagnosed with degenerative diseases and conditions
  • Caretakers worried about the safety of their loved ones

Government Funded Falls Alarms

The cost of fall alert devices can range between $180 – $500+, depending on the device’s functionality and design that best suit the user’s needs. For those eligible, government-funded personal alarms are available upon request. In Australia, eligibility is often based on factors such as age, disability status, living arrangements and specific needs. In particular, seniors and individuals with limited support systems and at high risk of falls are prioritised.
