Could it be sepsis?

Could it be sepsis?

Do you have an infection or wound?

Is it not getting any better?

If that’s the case, you may need to ask yourself, “Could it be sepsis?”

Sepsis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition triggered by the body’s extreme response to an infection. It occurs when chemicals released into the bloodstream fight the infection and cause inflammation throughout the body.

Such a phenomenon can lead to organ damage and failure if not promptly treated.

Anyone can get sepsis, especially those who are at a higher risk include:

  • people with weakened immune systems
  • people aged over 65 years
  • pregnant or recently pregnant people
  • infants and young children
  • people diagnosed with diabetes, cancer, AIDS and kidney or liver disease
  • people with any skin injury (e.g. cuts, burns)

Symptoms of sepsis are not specific and can vary depending on the individual. Symptoms of sepsis may include:

  • Confused or disoriented
  • Fast, shallow breathing
  • Sweating and shivering for no clear reason (hot or cold)
  • Muscle pain
  • Body swelling

If such symptoms are noticed and persistent, go to a health care provider and receive a check-up immediately.
